Female statue

Material Marble
Dimensions height cm. 78
Chronology Hadrianic Age
Inventory RCGE 5965

The statue, equipped with a plinth, was found in the ground layer of the cold water pool(frigidarium) of the baths. It depicts a young woman, slightly smaller than life-size, whose head, right arm and left hand have been lost. Leaning on her left leg, she wears a peplos (Greek dress) stopped below the breast by a belt, a cloak and sandals. It has been hypothesised that the sculpture was completed by the figure of a snake held in the right hand, of which there are traces of the props along the side and on the belly, and thus depicted the Greek goddess Hygieia, protector of health. It is a copy of a Greek original from the 4th century BC, made at the time of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD).
